R3c Active Front Lines: Odessa, TX Shooting
September 12, 2019
At the beginning of August, R3 Continuum responded to the El Paso, Texas shooting where 20 people were killed and dozens more were injured. On Saturday, August 31st, another mass shooting took place in Texas, this time in Odessa. The gunman killed seven people and injured at least 25 more people.
There is indication the shooter was experiencing an ongoing psychological decompensation and moving on a pathway towards violence prior to the day of the attack. We know the shooter was fired from his job on the morning of the attack, which from all signs was a contentious termination as both he and the employer called 911 to complain about the other party. Yet we do not know if and to what extent that event acted as a final trigger to his violent actions. Prior to commencing his attack the shooter called 911 and some minutes later called the FBI national tip line, yet on both of those initial calls he made no threats of violence, per authorities. In 2014 a federal background check denied him from purchasing a gun because of a “mental health issue.”
